| Hoi An extends pedestrian-only days |
VietNamNet Bridge - The world heritage town of Hoi An will ban on a trial basis from next week the use of vehicles for three days a week.
Le Van Giang, chairman of the Hoi An people’s committee [the government], said it would be pedestrians-only on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday starting June 25.
On these days, the roads in the centuries-old town will be closed to cars, motorbikes, and other motor vehicles from 8am to 11am, 2:30pm to 4:30 pm, and 7pm to 9pm.
During these times cyclos and wheel chairs will be allowed.
The local administration said an array of cultural activities would be organized showcasing the lifestyles of Hoi An residents in the early part of last century.
The idea of having non-vehicle days was first mooted in 2004, with the first pedestrian-only areas debuting in July that year.
Initially, on Wednesdays and Saturdays Hoi An’s seven streets – Bach Dang, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Tran Phu, Le Loi, Hoang Van Thu, Chau Thuong Van, and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai – were limited to pedestrians and bicycles only.
